I knew from Emma Claire’s first email that her and Rohan’s wedding would be a special one. “We’re getting married in an intimate, family-only ceremony at my parents’ home on New Year’s Eve”, she wrote. A wedding at home in Birmingham, Alabama felt like a promising introduction. Little did I know just how beautiful that night would come to unfold.
I’d yet to learn that New Year’s Eve was the anniversary of the day Emma Claire finally texted Rohan with an “ok, let’s do this” message after months of off-and-on dating. I didn’t know just how full of kindness, support, and joy their families would be for them. Or that their ceremony would be officiated by Emma Claire’s sister, and filled with readings from family members. That we’d be celebrating with champagne and slices of the infamous Bottega coconut cake. A wedding at home has never felt more intimate, sentimental, or downright full of magic.
It’s the kind of wedding where I found myself in the middle of the ceremony standing behind the last row of chairs, discreetly wiping away my happy tears. Even though I’d just been introduced to Emma Claire and Rohan a few months ago, this particular set of circumstances – setting, story, family members – came together to create the perfect cocktail of sentiment. I can only imagine how beautifully profound it felt for Emma Claire and Rohan themselves.
