I still remember my first glimpse of Paris. I’d taken the Eurostar from London and exited the train station to go to the cab line, not expecting at all that every inch of the city would look like you’d think Paris looks – intricate facades of buildings, wrought iron detailing, cafe tables and chairs sprinkled across sidewalks. I truly thought that like most cities, Paris would have parts that felt more urban and less charmingly French, and I was completely, thankfully wrong.
The week that followed was filled with walks, croissants, espresso, gardens, and the constant consumption of art and architecture. I traveled with a group of photographers who allowed each other the gift of time to linger on street corners with our cameras. If you’ve traveled with a photographer before, you know a common sentence we’ll repeatedly say while traveling is “you go ahead, I’ll catch up in a minute” – usually spoken with a camera to our eye because we’ve seen something we want to document. What a gift to be with a group of people who understood the importance of letting each other create what we wanted in the moment!
I shot 100% medium format film on this trip. Every photo you’ll see was taken on either Portra 400 or Tri-X on a Mamiya 645 AFD.
